Jesus on Fire!

As I read through yesterday's paper, this series of photos caught my eye. As you can see, a large, 6-story statue of Jesus was apparently struck by lightening. The resultant fire totally destroyed the statue, resulting in $700,000 in damages.

Hmm. Jesus on fire! How ironic that in this scenario, "Jesus" was on the receiving end destructive fire. But the Bible makes it clear that there is coming a day that Jesus Christ will be on the giving end of destructive fire. In 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 we read the following:

"God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed."

This is a passage that you will rarely hear preached from American pulpits in our day. Everyone wants to hear about God's love and care ... no one wants to hear about God's wrath and judgment. Yet these are both clearly taught, side-by-side in Scripture. So, are you ready?  One day Jesus will return ... "on fire." We must be ready to meet him. The only way to get ready is to embrace the gospel of Jesus.
